SUMMARY:BTEC Facility Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free\, in-person facility tour of the Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC) at NC State University! \nOpen to the Public: General community members\, university students/staff/faculty\, and industry professionals are invited to attend. Biotechnology-focused high school students are welcome to join with an accompanying parent or guardian. This is a technical tour and is not suited for students under the age of 14. \nProspective students are encouraged to attend an Engineering Information Session. The session covers admissions information and includes a guided centennial campus tour that starts in the BTEC building. \nCost: Visitors must pay for parking. Details are provided on registration page. Tours are free and limited to 15 attendees; registration is required. \nAgenda: Plan for a 1-hour visit to BTEC: 15-minute Introduction\, 40-minute Facility Tour\, & 5-minute Closing Questions. \n\n\nRegister on Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Industry Tech Talk - Getting Flow Right: Thermal Mass Flow in Bioreactor Systems
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to get thermal mass flow right in bioreactor systems. Brooks Instrument brings decades of flow measurement and control expertise to NC State BTEC for a practical session on specifying and troubleshooting mass flow controllers\, along with modern approaches to diagnostics and automation. \nKey Takeaways: \n\nMFC Selection & Sizing — Learn what to consider when specifying a mass flow controller for a bioreactor.\nPractical Troubleshooting — Explore common flow-control problems and how to identify their root causes.\nDiagnostics & Automation — See how digital diagnostics can provide earlier insight into process issues and support automated responses.\nLive Equipment Demonstrations — See real flow instrumentation in action and interact with the equipment.\n\nLunch is included with your free registration. \nRegister for the Event

SUMMARY:BTEC Seminar: Autonomous learning and design of proteins (Philip Romero\, Duke University)
DESCRIPTION:Title: \nAutonomous learning and design of proteins \nSpeaker: \nPhilip Romero\, PhD | Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering | Duke University \nAbstract:\nArtificial intelligence and machine learning are reshaping protein science by revealing patterns that connect protein sequences to their structures and functions at unprecedented scale. These predictive models allow researchers to navigate vast protein sequence spaces and identify molecules with useful properties for applications in medicine\, energy\, and biotechnology. In this talk\, I will describe my group’s work developing data-driven models that learn sequence–function relationships directly from large experimental datasets and use them to design improved proteins that go beyond previously observed examples. I will also highlight our efforts to build fully autonomous “self-driving laboratories” that combine AI-based decision making with robotic experimentation\, enabling proteins to be designed\, tested\, and optimized without human intervention. Together\, these approaches illustrate a new paradigm for protein engineering in which artificial intelligence and experimentation are tightly integrated to accelerate scientific discovery. \nBiography:\nPhilip Romero is an associate professor of Biomedical Engineering at Duke University. Dr. Romero pursued graduate studies in Frances Arnold’s lab at Caltech and was a postdoctoral researcher in Adam Abate’s lab at UCSF. He is the recipient of the Damon Runyon-Rachleff Innovation Award\, the Shaw Scientist Award\, and the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) Innovation Award. His research group at Duke focuses on data-driven approaches to model and design biological systems. \nRegister on Eventbrite
