Eugene Shon (left) was among the 14 participants in BTEC's Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program who presented posters at the university's Spring Undergraduate Research & Creativity Symposium. Miles Calzini (right), a scientist with BTEC’s AIM-Bio program, advised Shon on her project. The symposium was held April 22–23 at Talley Student Union.

Fourteen undergraduate engineering students participating in BTEC’s Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program shared their project results at the university’s Spring Undergraduate Research & Creativity Symposium(opens in a new window), which was held at Talley Student Union April 22 and 23. The symposium, hosted by the NC State University Office of Undergraduate Research, is held annually and features more than 300 student presentations spanning a wide variety of disciplines. BTEC students presented on topics that included upstream and downstream process development, process automation, data visualization and modeling, and analytical methods development.

The BTEC REU program, which is supported by the College of Engineering, provides NC State University engineering students the opportunity to gain hands-on research experience in biomanufacturing under the mentorship of BTEC faculty and staff. Projects focus on the core areas of biomanufacturing, including cell line development, upstream processing, downstream processing and analytical development. More than 125 students have participated in the BTEC REU program since it began in 2016.

For more information about the program, see the BTEC website or email Hayley Flores, Ph.D., BTEC senior scientist in fermentation.
